Ups and Downs

As the doctor predicted, Thomas is having his ups and downs. Last night after his visitors left, he went from being curled up in a ball, moaning from pain, to a crazy man-being silly, talking non-stop and bouncing all over the bed. He would throw himself back on the pillow and laugh. I told him he had to calm down and be more careful. He said, "It doesn't hurt!" He doesn't realize that it really does hurt, he just can't feel it because of the meds.

He is getting a small dose of morphine every 6 hours, with Tylenol and codeine in between. His pain is much more under control now, but he still has times when it hurts badly. He has been very quiet today, sleeping a lot.

We were moved out of the private room just before lunch. They needed his room for someone to be in isolation. We are now in a ward room. It is very noisy and busy. He is handling it it reasonably well. I had been wondering how he would be able to adjust to home after his peaceful private room. Now home will seem quiet in comparison! At least at home we have some control over the noise and activity. But we are thankful that he could be in a private room when he most needed it.

Thomas is starting to be able to keep small amounts of food and fluids down most of the time. He has learned that the hospital pantry has an endless supply of popsicles and ice cream. What little boy wouldn't like that?

We made a short visit to the playroom this afternoon while he was feeling well. He was a little weak and wobbly, but he loved it. It wiped him out, though, and by the time we got back he was frowning with pain again.

So we are taking it one day at a time. We have no word yet about discharge. He needs to be off morphine and eating and drinking well first.

Thanks to all for your love and support. It means so much. : )

We are all so glad to hear that there are glimmers of the "real" Thomas coming through. We are also thankful that there are meds out there to help in time of need. We continue to pray for healing and for strength for all of you.

Our family is also facing a sad time ith our newest son (3 weeks old). This maks me also remember to b praying for your little boy. We find mercy in the midst of trials.
Yesterday while we were at the children's hospital I thought of you and prayed.

I look forward to haring of a full recovery. Our daughter is just a bit younger than your little man and I can NOT imagine keeping her pinned down. I as wondering if he might like story tapes. There are many good ones out there.
We like the Smithasonian tapes that go with books on animals.
