Progress...

It's time for another update on our addition/reno.  It's been a busy week and the project  is moving right along.  On Monday a crew came in to do the roof.  By 4:00 they had the trusses up and the sheeting and shingles on.

That day the back wall of the house got knocked out and the beam put in place.  At last we got to see how the plan would come together.  Our kitchen/dining room will be very spacious.  Already now it is difficult to think of it the old way.  It just seems right the way it is now.  It's hard to capture the whole area on one picture, but below you can sort of get the idea.  Missing on the picture is most of the kitchen area which will be to the left of what is shown.

The other days this week were not quite as dramatic.  Some closets got framed and walls put in place.  We tore out the bathroom and Jerry put another smaller beam in place, we pulled down  lots and lots of drywall - all the drywall of the old kitchen and laundry room, and are now taking out the old flooring.  This is turning out to be a horrible job.  The top layer of vinyl and plywood is coming off without too much trouble, but the original vinyl and chip board is coming off bit by bit with lots of prying.  We stayed up late last night to get two sections cleared out so Jerry could frame in our pantry closets today, and the kids and I spent most of  today (between doing laundry, serving coffee, caring for little people, answering questions about where the switches and outlets should go, what kind of lighting we want, etc...) working away at it and only got about 1/3 of it done.  If you were thinking of coming over to join in the fun, now would be the time.   Doesn't it look like something good times are made of?

Warren has been Jerry's right-hand man.  He works with him all day and is learning so much, way more than I could teach him in a year, I think.  Jerry really pushes him to learn and think and work hard, but is also amazingly patient.

Together they got the house wrap put on and five of the windows in.  This is what it looks like now from the outside...

Both the plumber (who got the two upstairs bathrooms hooked up!) and electrician (who wired in a 20 amp outlet in the garage!)  have gotten started, and today the basement floor was poured.  Tomorrow is a holiday and we'll be working in the morning, but hope to take some time off in the afternoon and evening.  We've been working late every night and we all need a break.  On Saturday we'll be back to chipping away at the floor. :P  But it will all be worth it.  We just have to keep reminding ourselves of that as we hammer away at the pry bars.

And, is if we haven't had enough excitement this week, Allison turned 16 on Sunday and got her G1 yesterday. Should that be a :) or a :( ?

:) Leah.

The addition looks great. Definately need a comfy chair (or two) in the dining room. That is great that Warren can help so much. Nothing like using the math skills, hey!

Happy birthday Allison, and Gavin. Congrats on the G1, I think.

Carmen,
The last picture of the cladded addition from the East corner doesn't show any windows, but on other pictures there were 5 window frames. Was there a change of mind, or are the windows simply not cut out of the cladding yet?

Rob,
The windows are there, just hiding behind the house wrap. Jerry didn't have time to get all of the windows in that day, but they are in now. Very nice and bright in that room. :)
