How Thomas is doing...

We are often asked how Thomas is doing.  In most respects he's doing great.  He's his busy, cute, happy self.  He's doing kindergarten work along with Gavin, is quick enough to catch flies with a fly swatter, and the questions he asks show that he really thinks about things.  Like, "Why don't birds' and flies' wings work the same way?"  What he meant by that was why birds' wings flap and flies' wings buzz. :)  Soaring around the room with his arms stretched out wide he asked, "Why do birds go like this?"

The one exception to all this is that he still cannot handle travelling in the van.  He closes his eyes, moans and says that his head hurts.  Usually he's very articulate about things, but in this he can't seem to explain how it feels other than that it hurts.  Mostly we have just avoided taking him anywhere.

Last week we thought we'd try taking him to church, so we moved his booster seat to the centre of the front bench in the van so that he could see out the windshield instead of the side windows.  We gave him some Gravol about an hour before we had to leave and that seemed to work.  The ride went well, at church he fell into a deep sleep and slept through the entire service, and then he was fine on the ride home.  I forgot to give him another dose until 15 minutes before we were to leave for the evening service.  The package says to give it a minimum of 30 minutes, but preferrably 1-2 hours, before travelling.  That ride did not go so well, and he felt miserable for about an hour.

This week Gerald picked up two of those strips to hang off the back of the van.  People say they help  prevent motion sickness.  It can't hurt to try them, and if they work it would be better than having to give him Gravol every time.

Thomas has a follow-up appointment with the specialist next week, so we'll be sure to mention this to her. Although what he is experiencing is minor compared to what could have been, we are a little concerned because it hasn't improved any over the last 6 weeks.  Thank you for your care and concern and for keeping Thomas in your prayers.

Love,
